Momus was created around 2016 when I was regularly meeting up with my friend “Stuggy” (Dylan) to create whatever madness came to mind in our basement studio in Oakland CA. The project took on the name “Dusty Snout” in an attempt to describe the subculture of “wooks” in the festival scene but in a rather uncouth and sarcastic manner, implying their nostrils were caked with drugs after becoming dehydrated in whatever outside venue was hosting them.
We were both heavily influenced by Dub and other related forms of electronic and sample-based music. I had previously been working on a similar album called “Alien Archaic” which was more concentrated in sound design and found sound, so I had a catalogue of random sounds and instruments. Stuggy also would find peculiar audio clips and beat samples scattered on the internet that were tasteful and matched the tone of our budding unknown identity. We even spent time recording live audio performances to work with during those dusty sessions.
Much of the feeling was rooted in some kind of peace of mind we found in the lulling, monotonous and droning noises that we stumbled upon. The direction was aimless but yet cohesive as we shared this catharsis over the breaking of conventional ideas and sarcastic usage of common electronica elements. It’s an ode to mockery, as we mocked the state of music, the state of existence and the state of our wallets.
Needless to say, this album is not intended for pleasurable listening, but something akin to satisfaction may be found in its uncanny expressions. The development of each track has a different story, elements from different times in my life as an audio engineer and a whole lot of emotional distress.
As this album is full of stolen, borrowed, twisted and mutilated audio clips as well as contributors not mentioned, we have no interest in pursuing monetization of this content, it’s sole purpose is to stand as an abysmal monument to fuckall. You have heard what it says, now please leave.
